The Context
Population aging represents one of the most significant challenges of our time. Recent studies conducted in academic and industrial settings converge in defining active aging as a multifaceted process aimed at promoting the physical, cognitive, and social well-being of the elderly population through targeted, evidence-based interventions.
In this context, technological and scientific innovation plays a central role: together with the adoption of new health and social policy strategies, it is a fundamental driver for addressing the continuously evolving needs generated by global population growth. At the same time, the elderly population represents a strategic resource for the economy and society, exerting a growing influence on family, business, and policy decisions.
The Project
D3A – Digital Assistant for Active Aging is an innovative digital platform developed entirely in Italy and designed to improve the quality of life of the elderly population by enhancing physical and cognitive performance.
The project involves the development of intelligent virtual assistants capable of supporting physical and mental training programs specifically designed to meet the needs of older adults. These experiences will be available both in traditional environments and through virtual reality technologies, opening up new opportunities in digital health and home care.
Through the integration of artificial intelligence algorithms, the platform is able to:
- independently assess the effectiveness of the exercises provided to users;
- monitor physiological parameters in real time through wearable devices;
- generate automatic alerts when anomalies are detected in the recorded values;
- provide healthcare professionals with key indicators regarding the health status of end users.
A dedicated component will also ensure secure access and the protection of exposed endpoints, while enabling healthcare data interoperability through Blockchain technology.
The D3A project is funded under the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy’s “Innovation Agreements” program, through the Fund for Sustainable Growth, using resources from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) – NextGenerationEU.
Atlantica Digital S.p.A., the beneficiary of the funding, developed D3A with external consultancy support from Datasound, a spin-off of the University of Molise founded in 2017 by Professors Rocco Oliveto and Remo Pareschi. Datasound has well-established expertise in automated data analysis and the application of advanced machine-learning techniques for the development of clinical and business decision-support systems.
